The Infernal Devices
By: Cassandra Clare
In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.
The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them... (Clockwork Angel, Infernal Devices #1. I have tried to start this review for a long time, but every time I thought about it, I didn't know exactly how to start and just how I was going to organize and write out my thoughts.
To begin with, The Infernal Devices is one of my favorite all-time series. The books are in such order: Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, and Clockwork Princess (also shown above).
When it comes to the Fantasy genre, there are certain borderlines that I am afraid of crossing. A great example would be the topic of vampires. There are so many books out there about them, and I have read many. However, I have come to notice that a lot of the plots and ideas of all these books to be very similar. I talk about this more in my review of the Soul Seekers Series by Alyson Noel, which you can view here.
You can pretty much say that I have high expectations.
I can't even remember how I came across this series. What I do know is that I borrowed Clockwork Angel from the library along with several other books last summer, and I kind of set it aside because I wasn't in a rush to start another, sorry for being stereotypical, fantasy story...
When I started the book, I couldn't put it down.

One of the main reasons why this series turned me on was because it incorporated history into it. This series is set during the Victorian era in London. This book is not just a book that tells the "fantasy" aspect it, but it also gives us a taste of what it was like to live during that time. Cassandra doesn't give us an entire picture of the era, but more-so gives us a sample of it for the reader to try out, which ends up with us (as the readers) wanting more, and more, and more.
The concept of Shadowhunters was okay. I'm familiar with the whole nephilim/angel/mixed-breeding concepts, but the term "shadowhunter" was new to me, so I was 50/50 when it came to learning about the history of the shadowhunters and such.
Onto the characters...

In this story, you have your typical two guys liking the one girl. Will and Jem, who are very close (who didn't see that coming?), both love Tessa Gray, who is absolutely AWESOME! While I did see whole love "triangle" coming, I did not expect Tessa to be so...great. I mean, I expected her to be stubborn and one of those stupid girls that you immediately labeled in your head as you read. However, she turns out to be reasonable and just plain lovable. Not to mention her love for books... =D
This book doesn't only focus on the three "main" characters, though. It also focuses on many of the other side characters and gives us an insight on everything going on in the views of an entire family, basically, which is totally legit because the books don't have this self-centered feel to it. Instead, reading the books feel more homely and comfortable.
This series was like walking in the dark. I had an idea as to where the story was going, but then something unexpected happens and I'm lost and thrown off balance again. I loved the cliffhangers and suspense and the way things turned out. It wasn't your average fantasy book! *cheers*
One of my favorite series, and that won't be changing for a loooooong time.
My Rating:
1/5 I didn't like it
2/5 It was okay
3/5 I liked it
4/5 I really liked it
5/5 It was amazing
