Safe Distance
Megan Green
Haylee Jordan is no stranger to heartbreak. Growing up, she quickly learned to fend for herself, and after a hellish night in high school, she knows the only way to keep her heart safe is to keep everybody else out.
Ryan Porter considers himself married to the military. After losing his father and brother at a young age and witnessing the subsequent downfall of his mother, Ryan has sworn off any semblance of love.
After Ryan helps Haylee out of a sticky situation, the two find themselves growing closer, but with Ryan's impending deployment and Haylee's trust issues, they vow to never let it become something more.
However, Ryan quickly finds himself falling for Haylee, and Haylee is unable to deny that Ryan makes her happier than she's been in a long time. Will the two of them be able to overcome their pasts and open their hearts? Or will they always be determined to keep everyone at a safe distance?

So I just finished this book and all I'm thinking right now is, "Why isn't this book well-known????"
This book was just plain awesome. It was such a well-balanced standalone! It wasn't too emotionally overwhelming (think sad feelings), neither was it too fun-filled.
So we have Haylee and her best friend Amanda, who is almost always upbeat and knows more about Haylee than anyone else. Then we have Ryan and his best friend Chris, also a military guy, but with a very sweet and awesome girlfriend named Emma.
If it weren't for Amanda being distracted by her boyfriend Justin one night at a bar, then Haylee and Ryan may have never had their first encounter... Thought I was going to say more? You're gonna have to read the book to learn what happened ;).
I loved how every emotion that was felt by the readers came through the characters. I can just see Green while writing this story: "This part of the book needs to be happy. Hmmm I'll just add Chris to this scene! =D" Whether this was done on purpose or not, it was very effective and it made me feel the emotions that I needed to feel at that given time.
I seriously loved this book. It was so good and refreshing to read while not being so fluffy that it's overdone. I loved the dual POVs and how the readers got to see what it was like to be a soldier overseas in a place like Afghanistan. I seriously feel like I could re-read this book all over again.
And did I mention how serene the cover is? Love it.
I can only hope that we get a book on Emma now... =)
