Distraction
Angela McPherson
Aside from the normal changes in her life, college junior, Elle Richards, can always count on her friendship with Tristan. The longing for him to love her back is something she keeps well hidden, even from herself. No matter how many miles apart they are, regular phone calls and texts keep them close…until the day everything changes.
Wide Receiver Tristan Daniels has a good thing going. Much to his, and every single woman’s surprise, he’s in a committed relationship. The possibility of going pro looks more than promising…until his spur of the moment transfer to a rival college is approved. Now, Tristan will be forced to be in the presence of the woman he’s secretly loved for as long as he can remember. Elle.
Being away from one another was enough to keep Tristan and Elle distracted, but angst, confusion, and troubled secrets launches them into a breathless, heart pumping story you won’t want to miss!

And so begins the somewhat-complex story of Tristan and Elle.
I obviously do not want to give anything away to anyone who wants to read this in the future (which you totally should), but basically, it's about fate trying to bring an unspoken relationship together in the midst of misunderstandings, doubts, and distractions (did I intend that pun?).
Tristan's character really stood out: he's a football player, but I would definitely not consider him a jock. Hell, if I really wanted to classify him (which is VERY difficult to do so), I would have created a category between "troublemaking-hot-guy-who-is-a-player-and-seems-like-he-doesn't-care-about-things-like-school" and "sweet-and-thoughtful-guy-who-excels-in-everything-and-is-just-perfect". It's just so hard to explain what kind of a person he is because he is a little bit of both. He's a good guy and cares, but he's not perfect and definitely does his good share of sleeping/messing around.
Elle is also a bit of a mix in terms of personality. She's the girl that loves football and being casual, but can really party and look her best. She really pissed me off at times, but after thinking it over, I understood why she did/said the things she did/said. I still had the lingering emotion of anger towards her, but saw where she was coming from.
One of the reasons why I LOVED this book was because you get to read from both Elle's AND Tristan's point of view. McPherson wrote in a way where she wrote from Elle's POV, but wrote to the point where the fuel was about to run out, creating exhaustion, and that's when she switches. It was so refreshing to switch over to Tristan's POV and vice versa. The author gave us enough of both characters, and that was definitely a bonus for me!
My inner, analytic self surfaced several times while reading this book. There was so much imagery; there was irony here and there. It was truly a satisfactory feeling when I actually started to highlight and makes notes of areas in the book. If you do that to a book, then the author is doing it right!
I do wish, however, the relationships of certain people in the book were elaborated on more. For example, Tristan and Elle both have problems with certain family members (who doesn't?). Those situations and their relationship with those people were mentioned, but skimmed. I wish the readers were given more insight on the relationships among the people in the book (minus the love relationships), because I did not feel a connection with any of them. Sure, this is mainly a romance book, but other hints about their lives outside of the love were mentioned, and focusing more on those points would have created a balance within the book. In my opinion, it would have allowed the reader and the characters to fully connect.
In terms of the content in the story that has the book at a "Recommended for ages 18+" status, it actually wasn't bad. A lot of the story happens during frat/college parties, so the language is according to that kind of a scene for the most part. There was steam, but it was not overdone. The book contained just the right amount!
The book triggered so many emotions within me, and it was great! I recommend it!
My Rating:
1/5 I didn't like it
2/5 It was okay
3/5 I liked it
4/5 I really liked it
5/5 It was amazing
